WikiProject Anthroponymy

This is WikiProject Anthroponymy, a collaboration area and open group of editors dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of Anthroponymy, that is information related to the names of people. The scope of this project includes articles about anthroponymy itself and related topics. WikiProject Anthroponymy welcomes new participants and encourages them to see how they can help.

This WikiProject has recently been updated to a more modern WikiProject framework as detailed in the WikiProject Council Guide.

A Standards document has been started, which will always be available at the WP:APO Navigation menu above. Please help us by contributing. We need your say at Standard discussions to build a consensus and therefore a solid standard!

Open tasks

  • We need to create an article that can be an example of the model page that all name articles should reflect
  • Infobox names that include useful information
  • Start assessing the quality of each name article and utilize the bot to index these pages. As of 2008-03-22, 75% are not assessed along either of the two assessment dimensions. As of June 14, 2014, 51% of the Anthroponymy articles do not have an importance assessment.--DThomsen8 (talk) 15:47, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
  • Create a new name article — see Wikipedia:WikiProject Anthroponymy/Articles that could be created for some suggestions for name articles
  • Other ideas?

Relative Projects

An explanation as to why each WikiProject is relevant and related to the Anthroponymy Project has been provided here. Listed WikiProjects each have a reciprocal back-linkage to WikiProject Anthroponymy unless otherwise noted.

  • Linguisticsumbrella (no back-linkage)
Linguistics is relevant to name studies in at least three ways: by providing the limits on vocalization and spelling that apply to human names in addition to other words in a language; by providing a language context from which new human names may emerge (e.g. brown the color becoming Brown the surname; smith the occupation becoming Smith the surname); and by providing transformation rules that apply to human names as they traverse linguistic boundaries alongside the migration of peoples and the evolution of languages.
  • Etymologyinactive (no back-linkage)
The etymology of a surname or given name is an essential part of a complete surname or given name article
  • Clans of Scotland
Scottish Clans are the origin of a significant number of surnames emerging from the British Isles. These surnames are often used as male forenames too. For instance, Ross, Cameron, or Campbell.
  • Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation (no back-linkage)
As of Q1 2008 there is an ongoing discussion around what distinguishes a dab page from a name article and what things belong in each.
