Frozen is a 2013 American 3D computer-animated film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It was directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, the latter of whom also wrote the screenplay, and was produced by Peter Del Vecho. The film focuses on Anna, a princess who sets off on a journey to find her estranged sister, Elsa, whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped their kingdom in eternal winter.[1][2]
The film premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California, on November 19, 2013, before going into wide release on November 27 in over 3,700 theatres in the United States and Canada. It debuted in second place, earning more than $67 million. The film grossed a worldwide total of over $1.27 billion on a production budget of $150 million.[3] Frozen became the highest-grossing animated film of all time in March 2014, and was the highest-grossing film of 2013.[4][5] It held the former record till August 2019 when The Lion King surpassed it.[6] Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, surveyed 241 reviews, and judged 90 percent to be positive.[7]
Frozen garnered a variety of awards and nominations, many of them in the Best Original Song (for "Let It Go") and Best Animated Feature categories. At the 71st Golden Globe Awards, the film earned two nominations, winning for Best Animated Feature Film.[8][9] At the 41st Annie Awards, Frozen joint-led the nominations with Monsters University, both earning ten nominations.[10] The film went on to win five Annie Awards, including Best Animated Feature.[11] At the 86th Academy Awards, Frozen became the first film by Walt Disney Animation Studios to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature,[12] and won the Best Original Song award for "Let It Go".[13] Frozen also won the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film and the Critics' Choice Movie Award for both Best Animated Feature and Best Song.[14][15] At the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, the Frozen soundtrack won the award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media and "Let It Go" won the award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.[16] The film's visual effects were acclaimed by the Visual Effects Society, which gave the film awards in all four of its animated film categories.[17]
